Overview
The Motivational Interviewing and Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (MI and SBIRT) Workshop will increase healthcare providers’ skills in and efficacy performing SBIRT with a motivational interviewing style. They will then be capable of addressing patients’ unhealthy substance use using evidence-based practices.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the spirit of motivational interviewing (MI).
  2. Discuss 4 processes of MI.
  3. Defend why MI is a constant practice.
  4. Discuss the rationale for universal screening.
  5. Identify the potential health impact of substance misuse and abuse.
  6. Identify substance use risk limits.
  7. Determine when and how to use validated screening instruments in the brief intervention.
  8. Explain how to conduct a brief intervention using MI techniques.

Accreditation
The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
