Overview
This will be an interdisciplinary research and evidence-based conference regarding the connection between oral health and systemic disease. The topics that will be covered include: Oral Microbiome and Metabolic Health, Interprofessional Learning Experience and Approach to Diabetes Screening, Identification and eradication of red complex bacteria for combating periodontal disease and oral systemic complications, and Pediatric Health, Airway, Sleep Disorders, and Breathing, “Welcome Baby! Orofunctional and Airway Dentistry for Infants and Children”

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe how oral dysbiosis, inflammation, diet, and microbial translocation may connect oral disease with metabolic and systemic health.
  2. Differentiate biologic plausibility, observational association, and clinical evidence when discussing oral-systemic relationships.
  3. Apply a bidirectional medical-dental screening and referral workflow for patients with periodontal disease, diabetes, or elevated metabolic risk.
  4. Explain how maternal oral ecology, caregiver saliva, and early microbial acquisition influence oral health during the first 1,000 days of life.
  5. Appraise maternal xylitol gum as an adjunct to prenatal oral-health care, including the strength of evidence, limitations, safety considerations, and need for continued standard dental care.
  6. Recognize pediatric orofunctional, airway, breathing, and sleep-related findings that warrant further evaluation or referral.
  7. Construct an interdisciplinary prevention plan with defined roles for medicine, dentistry, dental hygiene, nursing, and allied health, including closed-loop communication.
  8. Understand leading indicator salivary, blood, and urine markers of inflammation
  9. Recognize the predictive value of oral health for systemic disease
  10. Identify clinical utility of CGM beyond diabetes
  11. Explore gender differences in glucose regulation
  12. Describe the Microbial Oral Systemic Axis (MOSA) framework, and identify how oral and systemic inflammation factors can be incorporated into clinical decision making.
  13. Recognize signs of airway, breathing, and growth problems in children and adults that can affect long-term health.
  14. Identify diagnostic tools and treatment options for airway and breathing concerns, from infancy through adulthood.
  15. Identify risk factors and current screening guidelines for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and periodontal disease
  16. Identify oral health educational resources that can be integrated into nursing, medical or dental curriculum.
